Crushing Summer
August 21, 2019Summertime activities should be about convenience.
Drink what you want, when you want. Sounds easy, right? While you prefer cocktails, the last thing you want to do is haul a bottle of liquor and mixers to your destination just for one or two libations. One beer isn’t enough, yet two beers are too many. You want to supersize the one can you do carry with you, and make sure it is something just as super cool as you. Why not switch up your rosé game while you are at it to finish the summer on high note?
Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie has just the solution to all these beverage problems in convenient, portable choices, whatever your drinking fancy may be these last few days of August.
FOR THE ACTIVIST IN YOU
While saving whales may not be on your radar, maybe at least limiting your use of plastic by drinking out of a can is, Radiant Pig Beers located in New York City has a radically different mission. SAVE THE ROBOTS is their East Coast India Pale Ale (IPA) style beer, coming in at 7% alcohol by volume.
East Coast IPAs are typically well balanced, often having a malt sweetness with citrus and fruity hop character, with a little hop bitterness on the finish. This one is a hazy, unfiltered beer with juicy, tropical flavors that span the hop multiverse, using no less then 5 different hops in their robotic creation. This is a big IPA that is the perfect answer for when you want just a little more, yet not too much, for your next beer occasion.
A NEW ROAD TO TRAVEL
Two Roads Brewery in Stratford, CT, has crossed the line, at least to the other side of the parking lot, to their new sour, barrel-aging and experimental brewery that they call Area 2. This is where they will focus on boundless brewery experimentation, including the production of Gose (pronounced like a garden hose) beers. This is a type of warm-fermented sour beer that originated in Germany. They do not have prominent hop bitterness, flavors, or aromas. Instead they typically showcase sourness on the palate, with herbal characteristics and a strong saltiness on the finish.
ROSÉ GOSE is an ale brewed with grapes. Its creation was inspired by the great Rosé wines that are filled with floral aromas and refined notes of strawberries and raspberries. You will spend time pondering if it is a beer or wine as you enjoy this tart treat!
A NEW TWIST ON CLASSIC
Interboro Spirits & Ales is Brooklyn’s only craft brewery and distillery. The show what can be done in numerous ways with just three key ingredients: grain, yeast and water.
GOODWIN HILL GIN + TONIC is a classic drink recipe using their very own Dutch-style house-made craft gin and putting it altogether in a can. It begins with a mash of barley and wheat, and ends with a mix of botanicals including juniper, coriander, lemon peel, black pepper, licorice root, and angelica root. This grain-forward gin combined with a citrusy tonic and a touch of lime is a bright refreshing drink, with only 10% alcohol by volume for an afternoon session, ready to be served wherever your travels may take you.
Remember to drink your canned beverage of choice responsibly and recycle your container appropriately along the way. With no corkscrew required and beverage transportation far easier than ever before with these convenient on-the-go selections, summer fun continues by leaving no can behind.
