A Toast to Sea Inspired Libations

Coastal living invokes thoughts of bathing in the sun and times spent swimming in the surf of ocean water.  Standing in line for ice cream, staying up late to admire the stars and wearing a hat most days to shade from the sun are all part and parcel of summer on Nantucket.  However, not all coastal conditions are created equal and neither are the libations that come from them. Sea-shanty worthy drinks are an expression of their watery sources, no matter how far and distant in between.  Take a liquid adventure as you discover with Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie a handful of libations worthy of your next oceanic experience. AN ORGANIC OCEAN You are what you eat, or drink in this case, and wouldn’t it be nice to know that you are putting only the best ingredients in your body while also being eco-friendly. Aloha to OCEAN ORGANIC VODKA from the beautiful island of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands.  This...Read More >

Welcome Aboard: Nautical Cocktails for Any Port

WELCOME ABOARD: NAUTICAL COCKTAILS FOR ANY PORT Nautically themed drinks in the Miami Vice era included brightly colored liqueurs in order to set the mood of being on a boat in trendy South Florida. Blue Curaçao resembled the vibrant blue color of the water. Brightly colored green Crème de Menthe was reminiscent for the color of the green markers on your port (left) side of the boat while leaving the channel to venture on your voyage. Crème de Almond represented the other side of the spectrum as the fiery red as in ‘red, right, return’ that tells you to leave the red markers to your right (starboard) when returning from sea. Luckily these days, and especially on the summer waters of Nantucket, these bold colors are more often seen in some variation on gentlemen sporting their classic Nantucket Reds or ladies adorned in their latest, most colorful Lilly Pulitzer outfit. As host of these fashionably clad party goers for sunset...Read More >

Whiskey in the Winter

You remember your father having a blended Scotch Whisky on the rocks as his cocktail of choice. It was easy to make, not a complicated beverage, and had that little bit of a burn going down the pipes – a man’s type of drink. Your older brother used to take a nip of Canadian Whisky when he was out deer hunting. It helped to keep him warm and pass the time as he was waiting patiently for the right moment to make his mark. And then there are the college football games where everyone likes to cheer with a splash of good ol’ American Whiskey. Its production is tried and true to the tradition of our forefathers, just like the colors of your Alma Mater. Whisk(e)y production has changed immensely recently, especially just over the past ten years. What we see on the market today isn’t your Pappy’s type of drink anymore. To give you a little background on this...Read More >
