Our Irish Eyes are Smiling

While Ireland may not be on the top of your travel list for those seeking a wine adventure, the local food and other alcoholic beverage scene there is worth a visit. From local microbrews (yes, there is more than just Guinness being served in bars) to craft distilleries (making not just whisky), Irish beverage innovators are making a new mark and disrupting the traditional drinking scene of the Emerald Isle. Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie recaps a handful of highlights of her highly anticipated, recent trip there with her husband, Certified Tasting Officer Kirk Baker. Visiting Ireland has been on my bucket list for several years now as Kirk and I both have a bit of Irish heritage. After learning there are direct flights daily from Boston (taking less time than flying to California) and about the ease of completing Customs before departing Shannon (instead of upon arrival in Boston), we knew this trip would be a no-brainer for us. Seafood, Sips + Sunshine

Summer on Nantucket is more than just going to one of the many beautiful, soft sandy beaches of the island.  It’s actually being on the water and feeling the energy that Mother Ocean has to offer. Whether you are surfing the waves at Cisco Beach, swiftly paddle boarding in the calmer waters of the harbor, or enjoying a personally guided fishing charter off-shore, it is always a pleasure to reap the rewards of your ocean experience with some edible nourishment from the waters and the perfect libation to pair with it. Nantucket is now home to a handful of locally grown oyster farms.  While these farms may be small in size, they are able to grow in distinctively different areas that show the diversity of our water culture’s influence. From Great Harbor Oysters, to RETSYO near the Wauwinet dock, you also have Pocomo Meadow and Fifth Bend in between. These tasty bivalves offer a certain salinity that is best matched with sparkling wine....Read More >

FALL for the Flavor of Sake

CELEBRATING NIHONSHU NO HI While summer is the quintessential season for many people on Nantucket, those of us who are lucky enough to be on island this time of year know that the weather associated with our Indian Summer and the lack of crowds this time of year are a just reward for the hustle and bustle of July and August. As we enter in to fall, this is the prime time for sake drinking. Brewed during the cold winter months and then pressed in the spring, sake is typically aged six months and then released in the fall for your enjoyment. What better way to celebrate the upcoming Nihonshu no Hi (Sake Day) on October 1, traditionally the starting date of sake production in Japan, than with a toast to this alcoholic beverage of Japanese origin made of fermented rice. What is sake? Sake is an alcoholic beverage that is made by fermenting rice. My first experience with sake...Read More >

The Many Savvy Styles of Sauvignon Blanc

Like sand at the beach, it is not all created equal. The color can range from pale cream to golden to caramel when wet, even black sand in a few far out reaches of the earth. The size of the sand varies from soft, finely grained to being course and rough, or perhaps somewhere in between. It is also important to consider the movement of the waves on the beach as in influencer on your beach experience. While it isn’t the sand itself, the soft lapping of the water on the shore or loud crashing of the waves will affect the overall ‘terroir’ aspect of the seaside region. Consider this inequality with Sauvignon Blanc wines that come from different growing climates, varying soil types and diverse production methods. Discover how the flavor profile and styles of this savvy white wine vary based on these influencing factors. A SANCERRE SUBSTITION STAND-OUT  When you think of summer, the seashore and what to...Read More >
