New & Noteworthy in 2018

Hello, Stunning Spring! With warmer weather soon on the horizon, your Nantucket summer checklist begins. Ferry is booked, bikes are getting tuned up and your social calendar is filling in nicely.  You are dying to know what’s happening on your little slice of paradise. Wait no longer… Advanced Sommelier Jenny Benzie has put together this quick list for you of a handful of NEW + NOTABLE items from Épernay Wine & Spirits that should be on your list to try for 2018. Spring is a time when Mother Nature likes to tease us with a somewhat warm, yet sunny day, only to be followed by three days of chilly wet weather that reminds us too much of winter. This is a transitional drinking season where you really want to start enjoying crisp dry whites, but you like the comfort of a lighter style red, similar to Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo, that will at least warm your heart as you long...Read More >

Welcome Aboard: Nautical Cocktails for Any Port

WELCOME ABOARD: NAUTICAL COCKTAILS FOR ANY PORT Nautically themed drinks in the Miami Vice era included brightly colored liqueurs in order to set the mood of being on a boat in trendy South Florida. Blue Curaçao resembled the vibrant blue color of the water. Brightly colored green Crème de Menthe was reminiscent for the color of the green markers on your port (left) side of the boat while leaving the channel to venture on your voyage. Crème de Almond represented the other side of the spectrum as the fiery red as in ‘red, right, return’ that tells you to leave the red markers to your right (starboard) when returning from sea. Luckily these days, and especially on the summer waters of Nantucket, these bold colors are more often seen in some variation on gentlemen sporting their classic Nantucket Reds or ladies adorned in their latest, most colorful Lilly Pulitzer outfit. As host of these fashionably clad party goers for sunset...Read More >

Rum Revival: Beyond the Dark ‘N Stormy

Rum has warm weather written all over. Sunshine, beaches, boats. A nice rum drink can easily transport your mind and spirit, if not your body physically, to such the place you would like to be if you aren’t there already. The history of rum and rum running makes this spirit all the more enticing, alluring and seductive. Not to mention that the right bottle of rum can also be a welcome addition to any beverage cart to make it look not just good, but sexy, sophisticated and sweet. Here is a quick rum run-down of not only good-looking bottles that would be aesthetically pleasing on any home bar and excellent quality rum for mixing, sipping or gift-gifting this summer season.  EL DORADO DEMERARA 3 YEAR WHITE RUM The word Demerara is well known in the rum connoisseurs world, but what exactly does this mean? Demerara is a county in Guyana with a rich history of rum production. While Guyana is...Read More >

Sun’s Out Rum’s Out

Summer is in full swing and so are the cocktail soirées. Whether you are meeting up with friends who have just arrived on island, après la plage with the family or cocktails and sunset before dinner, there isn’t a lack of excuses to partake and enjoy a refreshing cocktail concoction. Since it is summer and the sun happens to be out, no better time to also bring the rum out! Rum is synonymous with island living. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to be an island full of palm trees in order to take advantage of the benefits of rum drinking, but an island that just happens to be surrounded by water with a culture of sun, sand, surf and sometimes a little sailing, fishing or other various watersports. The summertime kick-off Figawi race, held annually on Memorial Day weekend, is a boat race from Hyannis to Nantucket. A prized possession of the top sailors is the distinctive and...Read More >
