Welcome Aboard: Nautical Cocktails for Any Port

WELCOME ABOARD: NAUTICAL COCKTAILS FOR ANY PORT Nautically themed drinks in the Miami Vice era included brightly colored liqueurs in order to set the mood of being on a boat in trendy South Florida. Blue Curaçao resembled the vibrant blue color of the water. Brightly colored green Crème de Menthe was reminiscent for the color of the green markers on your port (left) side of the boat while leaving the channel to venture on your voyage. Crème de Almond represented the other side of the spectrum as the fiery red as in ‘red, right, return’ that tells you to leave the red markers to your right (starboard) when returning from sea. Luckily these days, and especially on the summer waters of Nantucket, these bold colors are more often seen in some variation on gentlemen sporting their classic Nantucket Reds or ladies adorned in their latest, most colorful Lilly Pulitzer outfit. Rum Revival: Beyond the Dark ‘N Stormy

Rum has warm weather written all over. Sunshine, beaches, boats. A nice rum drink can easily transport your mind and spirit, if not your body physically, to such the place you would like to be if you aren’t there already. The history of rum and rum running makes this spirit all the more enticing, alluring and seductive. Not to mention that the right bottle of rum can also be a welcome addition to any beverage cart to make it look not just good, but sexy, sophisticated and sweet. Here is a quick rum run-down of not only good-looking bottles that would be aesthetically pleasing on any home bar and excellent quality rum for mixing, sipping or gift-gifting this summer season.  EL DORADO DEMERARA 3 YEAR WHITE RUM The word Demerara is well known in the rum connoisseurs world, but what exactly does this mean? Demerara is a county in Guyana with a rich history of rum production. While Guyana is...Read More >

National Orange Juice Day

Not Just for Breakfast Anymore Having lived in the year-round warm weather of Florida for several years, I got more than a taste of what a significant difference there is between freshly squeezed orange juice and the kind my mother used to defrost from concentrate. She would whip it up with a handful of ice in the blender and serve it in a wine glass at Sunday Brunch as a well-gestured attempt to make an Orange Julius. Taking this example into the world of cocktails (and cooking), we know that using the best ingredients in a drink recipe can make your libation a slam-dunk when it comes to impressing your guests. In honor of National Orange Juice Day, grab yourself the best fresh-squeezed OJ you can find (I highly recommend Natalie’s Orchard Island Juice Company’s 100% Florida Orang Juice) and have fun as you experiment with these concoctions while getting your daily dose of Vitamin C. Mimosa of Champions Chances...Read More >
